Another 6 840 streetlight-related faults fixed in 14 days

Between 14 and 27 August 2024, City energy teams attended to 6 840 streetlight-related requests across the metro. The City services more than 245 000 streetlights. Energy Mayco Member, Alderman Xanthea Limberg, has continued visiting streetlight projects across the metro including areas in Mitchells Plain and Gugulethu as new City interventions continue to make communities brighter and safer.
'The sheer volume of streetlight-related notifications that we are attending to is proof that our interventions are making a real difference despite the crisis-levels of repeated vandalism and theft that cause streetlight outages. Our additional contracting teams, more security and Energy Safety Team deployments are helping. We urge our customers to be part of the solution and let us know if they see any suspicious activity related to tampering, illegal connections, vandalism and theft of electrical infrastructure.

'The metro south region continues to be particularly plagued by the scourge. The data from the two weeks under review shows that of the total of 6 840 streetlight-related requests fixed, it includes the following: 2 913 streetlights were attended to in Area South, which includes Mitchells Plain, Gugulethu, Muizenberg and Wynberg. In Area East, which includes Khayelitsha, 2 049 notifications were attended to and in Area North, which includes Atlantis, energy teams fixed 1 610 streetlight-related notifications.
